The Player (1992)

Directed by Robert Altman, based on Michael Tolkin’s novel. A studio executive, played by Tim Robbins, is being blackmailed by a writer whose script he rejected - but which one? This plot is written on a backdrop of sleazy Hollywood deals and several subplots involving the politics of the industry, loaded with Hollywood insider jokes.

I find it one of the best movies ever made about movies. We start with an incredible long “one-shot” showing us all the different characters on the studio lot talking - e.g. about the best long opening shots of all time while Robert Altman skillfully is showing you one. Then we see Tim Robbins in his office with famous film posters around him (who’s titles later always fit in the right situation). Tim is excellent as studio executive, Griffin Mill, the way he talks, thinks or orders water (you’ll get it if you watch it). What I loved about “The Player” is not only the original idea and the hilarious script but also, to find and name all the famous cameos. I’m not gonna give away much, but this film is absolutely worth watching!

Closer (2004)

The relationships of two couples become complicated and deceitful when the man from one couple meets the woman of the other.

This movie has a fantastic cast - Julia Roberts, Natalie Portman, Jude Law and Clive Owen, who all did a great job. “Closer” is intelligent, thought provoking and rawly realistic. It’s beautiful, terrible, and real. Sadly, in a world where we’re used to hearing stories in the simplest and most easy to swallow terms, I doubt that the average lover of romantic comedies and action flicks will like it. This is a story about the perpetual struggles found in human relationships.

Pretty Woman (1990)

Richard Gere plays a businessman, who needs an escort for some social events, and hires a beautiful prostitute he meets, played by gorges Julia Roberts, and then of course falls in love with her. We all know and love the main soundtrack “Pretty Woman” by Roy Orbison, which also is the title of the film.

Edward is a rich, ruthless businessman who specializes in taking over companies and then selling them off piece by piece. He travels to Los Angeles for a business trip and decides to hire a prostitute. They take a liking to each other and he offers her money if she’ll stay with him for an entire week while he makes the “rich and famous” scene (since it doesn’t do for a man of his stature to be alone at society parties and polo matches). A romantic comedy (and complications) ensue.

The other ultimatum comes from his girlfriend Samantha, who wants him to end his association with the mob.
