Dogma (1999)

An abortion clinic worker with a special heritage is enlisted to prevent two angels from reentering Heaven and thus undoing the fabric of the universe. Along the way, she is aided by two prophets, Jay and Silent Bob. With the help of Rufus, the 13th Apostle, they must stop those who stand in their way and prevent the angels from entering Heaven. Yes, it’s a weird movie, but with a great message.

I have always loved Kevin Smith’s style of directing, anyone who has criticized Dogma for being offensive has really not understood the film. Dogma is full of excellent moments, such as Alanis Morissette in her small but important role as ‘God’, I also like Damon and Affleck together, no matter what they do. All the performances were excellent and the actors complimented each other superbly.

Nurse Betty (2000)

I always hear people complaining that Hollywood is out of ideas, and that they should do something more creative. Then a film like “Nurse Betty” comes along, and they still don’t like it. I loved it, the originality, the cast, the writing and the dark humor. I had to laugh so many times, Zellweger did such a great job playing Betty, balancing the tension of her delusional positivity with a buried sadness that is so delicate, it is heartbreaking to see.

After witnessing her crazy husbands death, played by Aaron Eckhart, Betty starts to believe she’s the fiancée of her soap opera idol, played wonderfully by Greg Kinnear. Her husband gets killed by Morgan Freeman and Chris Rock, who then are chasing after Betty. The writing is hilarious, I think, and the little complex story is very well executed. The scene where Bette introduces herself to the writers and some of the cast of her favorite soap opera “A Reason to Love” is one of the best balancing acts of conflicting views of reality I have ever seen on screen. Renee deserved her Golden Globe, she carried this film on her shoulders, and made it watchable.

I Think I Love My Wife (2007)

The story of a married man who daydreams about being with other women and finds his will and morals tested after he’s visited by the ex-mistress of his old friend. A film by and with Chris Rock, also starring Kerry Washington, Gina Torres, as his wife, Steve Buscemi and Edward Herrmann. I didn’t accept much when I watched this movie, but it’s pretty funny! The end was a little disappointing though, but still hilarious.

You know, some people say life is short and that you could get hit by a bus at any moment and that you have to live each day like it’s your last. Bullshit. Life is long. You’re probably not gonna get hit by a bus. And you’re gonna have to live with the choices you make for the next fifty years.

Madagascar (2005)

I hope most of you have seen this already, if not, give it a try. At New York’s Central Park Zoo four animals, a lion, a zebra, a giraffe and a hippo are best friends and stars of the show. But when one of the animals goes missing from their cage, the other three break free to look for him, only to find themselves reunited - on a ship en route to Africa. And there they learn first-hand what life can be like in the wild. Hilarious animated comedy film, that’s not only fun for kids. I liked all the different characters, the penguins are funny sidekicks, but King Julien is one of my personal favorites in this film. A wonderful thing about it is the references to other movies like “The Planet of the Apes” and “American Beauty”. Very obvious references I might add. This also means that the filmmakers are aware that a growing number of gross comes from adult audiences as well, and you then have to assume that the story is written for them as well. With the voices of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Jada Pinkett Smith, Sacha Baron Cohen, Cedric the Entertainer and Andy Richter.
