Happy Birthday George Clooney (51)

Out of Sight (1998)

A career bank robber busts out of jail (Clooney) with the help of his buddy (Rhames) and kidnaps a US Marshal (Lopez) in the process. When the two cons head for Detroit to pull off their final big scam, the Marshal is put on their case but she finds she is attracted to one of them and has second thoughts about bringing them in. Clooney and Lopez have actual, undeniable chemistry on the screen. The supporting players (especially Don Cheadle) are perfectly cast, Soderbergh effortlessly knocks this one out of the park.

The Descendants (2011)

Beautiful filmy by Alexander Payne starring George Clooney as a land baron, who tries to re-connect with his two daughters after his wife suffers a boating accident. I knew Hawaii was beautiful, but this film is shot on extraordinary backdrops. It also shows the problems the little state has. Matt King, played by Clooney, finds out that his wife cheated on him, but he can’t confront her, because she’s in a coma. So he tries to find the guy, together with his family, to confront him. A journey starts, a rolacoaster of emotions, he wants to find out what he did wrong, and sees all the problems his children have, who needed a father, that was never there. Both of his daughters are interesting characters, and the whole cast did a great job, but the core of the entire story is Clooney’s unbelievably terrific performance; he is vulnerable, strong, confused, decisive, anguished, angry. A great drama, that makes you think about the most important things in your life.

Good Night, and Good Luck. (2005)

Written and directed by George Clooney starring David Strathairn, George Clooney, Patricia Clarkson, Jeff Daniels and Robert Downey Jr.

The film has a documentary style that serves well to illustrate the story being told. Most of it occurring in the CBS studios in New York during the fifties. The crisp black and white cinematography, by Robert Elswit, gives the movie a nostalgic look to the way things were done in those days. Actor/Director George Clooney pays tribute to truth and decency amid distrust and uncertainty in the “Communist witch-hunts” with his recreation of its greatest hero, the newsman of newsmen, Edward R. Murrow.

Plot:

In the early 1950’s, the threat of Communism created an air of paranoia in the United States and exploiting those fears was Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin. However, CBS reporter Edward R. Murrow and his producer Fred W. Friendly decided to take a stand and challenge McCarthy and expose him for the fear monger he was. However, their actions took a great personal toll on both men, but they stood by their convictions and helped to bring down one of the most controversial senators in American history.

From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)

Two criminals and their hostages unknowingly seek temporary refuge in an establishment populated by vampires, with chaotic results.

Sounds crazy? It is! I love the originality of this movie and the cast is phenomenal, actors like Harvey Keitel, Quentin Tarantino, George Clooney, Salma Hayek and Juliette Lewis.

Plot:

Seth Gecko and his younger brother Richard are on the lam after a bloody bank robbery in Texas. They escape across the border into Mexico and will be home-free the next morning, when they pay off the local kingpin. They just have to survive ‘from dusk till dawn’ at the rendezvous point, which turns out to be a Hell of a strip joint.
