Dogma (1999)

An abortion clinic worker with a special heritage is enlisted to prevent two angels from reentering Heaven and thus undoing the fabric of the universe. Along the way, she is aided by two prophets, Jay and Silent Bob. With the help of Rufus, the 13th Apostle, they must stop those who stand in their way and prevent the angels from entering Heaven. Yes, it’s a weird movie, but with a great message.

I have always loved Kevin Smith’s style of directing, anyone who has criticized Dogma for being offensive has really not understood the film. Dogma is full of excellent moments, such as Alanis Morissette in her small but important role as ‘God’, I also like Damon and Affleck together, no matter what they do. All the performances were excellent and the actors complimented each other superbly.

Harold and Maude (1971)

Starring Ruth Gordon as lively 79 year old Maude, Bud Cort as young, depressed, death obsessed Harold, and Vivian Pickles as the snobbish, selfish mother, who doesn’t understand her son, at all. I had to laugh so many times, it’s not predictable what happens next and I have no idea how Harold comes up with so many fake suicides, only to get his mothers attention of course. The love Harold and Maude develop is unusual but pure, Mrs. Gordon did an excellent job portraying Maude.

Plot:

The self-destructive and needy wealthy teenager Harold is obsessed by death and spends his leisure time attending funerals, watching the demolishing of buildings, visiting junkyards, simulating suicides trying to get attention from his indifferent, snobbish and egocentric mother, and having sessions with his psychologist. When Harold meets the anarchist Maude at a funeral, they become friends and the old lady discloses other perspectives of the cycle of life for him. Meanwhile, his mother enlists him in a dating service and tries to force Harold to join the army. But he wants to control his own life.
